Why did astronomers conclude that pulsars could not be pulsating stars?
The material in the star would have to be moving at speeds much faster than the speed of light in a vacuum to be actually pulsing that fast. That's physically impossible. The ultimate speed limit of the entire Universe is the speed of light in a vacuum or near vacuum.
